- : .52 BEACON
- :
- :
- : Speaking about VHF matters, W1NZ reports by packet that he has
- : a half watt modulated cw beacon on 146.52 in Onyx, California.
- : Orrin says that it can barely be heard 30 km from its site but
- : tropo might make it occasionally audible elsewhere in the United
- : States. If you hear it, please send your QSN reports by packet
- : to W1NZ at WA6YBN or U.S. mail to P.O. Box 99, Onyx, CA 93255. Be
- : sure to include the text what you copy plus how often the beacon
- : is going off, This, as a check that really are copying it. Orrin
- : will QSL reports that he receives.
-
- I was under the impression that automatically controlled beacons on 2
- meters were restricted to 144.275-144.300 (97.203d). How, then, can
- this be legal? And anyway, does continuous MCW on the National
- Simplex Frequency, even locally, qualify as good practice?

- Hello everyone, I have been fairly active on the HF bands, but I am
- sort of getting a little bored with "skip" talking. I wouldn't mind a little
- local 2m ragchews. The thing is, I have never keyed down a 2m radio, (but I
- have monitored our repeater with my scanner) and I don't have a radio.
-
- I know you need a 100hz tone to activate the machine, so what type of
- radio (HT) should I get. Hopefully it would be cheep! Thanks N0ZYA -jmp-

- Marconi widow dies
-
- The widow of Guglielmo Marconi has died. The Marchesa M. Cristina
- Bezzi Scali died July 15, 1994, at age 94.
-
- The two were married in 1927. Marconi lived another 10 years, dying
- in 1937 at age 63.
-
- The couple had a daughter, Elettra, who was baptized by Cardinal
- Eugeni Pacelli, who would later become Pope Pius XII. Elettra's
- godmother was Elena di Savoia, queen of Italy.
-
- According to Pat Ciancarini, I0KHP, Elettra will continue the
- family's work in preparing for ''1995, Year of Guglielmo Marconi,''
- the centennial celebration of Marconi's first wireless telegraph.
-
- The funeral was held July 18. Among those attending were several
- bishops from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

-
- The geomagnetic field has been at quiet to unsettled

-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
- expected to be quiet. Unsettled to active conditions may appear

- HF propagation conditions were normal over all regions.
- No changes in propagation are expected until about 04 August

- particularly for transauroral night-sector circuits. Most
- other regions should see near-normal propagation.

-
- It's been done many times. In the "good old days", a lightbulb was
- frequently used as a dummy load as well as a visual indicator of
- power output from a transmitter.
-
- Inasmuch as the lightbulb is poorly shielded, radiation did (does)
- occur thereby making two-way contacts possible.
-
- How far? As with any contact, depends on propagation characteristics
- and band conditions.

-
- When you install an N connector on the end of a piece of Belden 9913, what
- do you do with the foil?
-
- According to the guy who is attempting this, the braid has someplace to go
- in the connector, but the outer foil doesn't, and he's concerned about just
- letting it float.
-
- I'm an HF person, so I don't use N connectors myself, but the problem
- prompted a long discussion on the local repeater, with no good answer, so
- it seems appropriate for this group.

- All the 9913 that I've used had the foil bonded to the outside of the

-
- Tell your friend to be aware that you need a special N connector for

- The ARRL currently publishes camera ready copy furnished
- by a number of the conferences, including the Eastern States
- VHF/UHF conference, AMSAT-NA Space symposium, Computer Networking
- conference, and Central States VHF conference.
-
- The West Coast conference wasn't able to get it ready in time,
- so they printed it on their own this year.
-
- The conference organizers often have copies of the proceedings
- for past years, even if we no longer have them.

- When conditions are right I can hear some of the other stations
- on the 5, 10, or 15 mHz frequencies underneath WWV. You might
- try listening just before the hour or half hour on whatever
- frequency favors Colorado USA or Hawaii at the time. Try
- turning up the volume and listening for faint background voices
- as you should have European stations on these frequencies.

- WWV is the National Institute of Standards and Technology time standard
- broadcasting on 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 Mhz providing time of day, standard
- time intervals, and other related information. Inquiries regarding these...
- (oops, I got carried away).
-
- It is generally available only in the U.S. Several other countries have
- their own time signals on these frequencies. I have a Heathkit GCW-1001
- digital clock which receives a 100Hz sub-carrier and keeps the clock
- locked on time. I used it to keep my Unix system and LAN clocks correct.
